The Basics

What is a GI Tag?

A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is an intellectual property right that protects products tied to a specific place — like Madhubani painting (Bihar), Banarasi sari (Varanasi), or Dokra craft (Jharkhand).

India recognizes GI tags under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999. Once granted, only producers from the registered geographical area can use the name commercially. It's legal protection, economic uplift, and cultural recognition — all in one.

📈

Higher Prices

GI-tagged products sell at 30–80% premium on average.

🛡️

Counterfeit Protection

Legal recourse against fake imitations using your craft's name.

🌍

Global Recognition

GI tags are recognized internationally under WTO TRIPS agreement.

The Process

6 Steps to GI Status

1

Cluster Survey

We document your craft, region, history, materials, and current practitioners.

2

Producer Body Formation

We help form a Producer Association (mandatory for GI applications).

3

GI Application (Form GI-1)

Our IP lawyers draft and file the application with the GI Registry, Chennai.

4

Examination & Opposition

12–18 month review by GI Registrar. We handle all queries and objections.

5

Publication & Approval

Once published in the GI Journal, we monitor for oppositions. Most go through cleanly.

6

Certification & Use

Certificate granted. Authorized users registered. Your craft is now legally protected.

Crafts We've Protected

Without Weavehand, the Tikuli GI tag would have died with us. They paid the lawyers, formed our association — we just had to attest the application.
