Weaving
“Sustainably Woven, Thoughtfully Crafted.”

The Story
Natural fibre and grass weaving is one of India's oldest craft traditions, practiced for centuries by rural and tribal communities across the country. Using locally available materials such as Sikki grass, Sabai grass, Moonj grass, Kauna reed, Water Hyacinth, Bamboo, and Jute, artisans traditionally created baskets, storage containers, mats, ritual objects, and household utilities. These crafts emerged from a deep understanding of nature and sustainable living, where communities transformed renewable natural resources into functional and decorative products. Over generations, these weaving traditions have been passed down within families, particularly among women artisans, preserving cultural heritage while supporting rural livelihoods. Today, natural fibre crafts have evolved into contemporary home décor, lifestyle accessories, furniture, and eco-friendly products that are valued in both domestic and international markets.
The Technique
Natural fibre and grass weaving involves harvesting, drying, cleaning, and preparing natural grasses and fibres before they are woven into products. Depending on the material, artisans use techniques such as coiling, braiding, plaiting, wrapping, stitching, twining, and weaving. Materials like Sikki grass are wrapped around a Munj grass base and stitched using traditional tools, while Sabai grass, Moonj grass, Kauna reed, and Water Hyacinth are woven or braided into various forms. Artisans often dye the fibres using natural or eco-friendly colors and incorporate decorative patterns to enhance the final product. The entire process is handcrafted and requires skill, precision, and generations of traditional knowledge, resulting in durable, sustainable, and aesthetically unique creations.
