Sujni Embrideory
“"More than embroidery, Sujni is a canvas where generations of women have stitched their stories, dreams, and traditions."”

The Story
The craft originated in Bhusura village, Bihar. Women from rural households stitched together old, layered saris and dhotis with a simple running stitch to create soft quilts (sujani) for newbornsSujni embroidery began as a household practice among rural women in Bihar. Originally, mothers and grandmothers stitched together worn fabrics to make soft quilts for newborns and family members. Over time, these functional textiles evolved into a unique art form where women expressed their experiences, folklore, festivals, nature, social issues, and aspirations through intricate running stitches. The word "Sujni" comes from the Hindi word "Sujani," meaning a decorated quilt. Characterized by fine hand embroidery and storytelling motifs, Sujni has transformed from a domestic craft into a globally recognized textile art form while retaining its strong connection to women's creativity and rural heritage.
The Technique
Layers of old sarees or dhotis are held together using a straight running stitch. The motifs are then outlined in dark chain stitches and filled in with vibrant colors to create unique visuals.
