Crochet & Macramé
“Loop-and-knot craft revived for export.”

The Story
Crochet entered India via colonial missions. Bihar collectives have transformed it into a women-led rural enterprise. The exact origin of crochet is heavily debated by historians, but modern crochet as we know it today emerged in Europe during the early 19th century. Unlike knitting, which dates back to medieval times, crochet is a relatively young textile craft.
The Technique
1. The FoundationThe Slip Knot: The process starts by creating an adjustable loop on the hook to anchor the yarn. The Chain Stitch (ch): The artisan wraps the yarn over the hook and pulls it through the slip knot. Repeating this action creates a starting chain that dictates the width or circumference of the project. 2. Foundational StitchesVirtually all complex patterns are created by combining four basic variations of pulling loops through the foundation chain:Single Crochet (sc): Creates a tight, dense fabric. The hook passes through a stitch, pulls up a loop, and then wraps yarn to pull through both remaining loops.Half-Double Crochet (hdc): Yarn is wrapped around the hook before entering the stitch, creating an intermediate height and a uniquely textured ribbing.Double Crochet (dc): A taller, highly flexible stitch used to construct sweaters, shawls, and blankets quickly.Slip Stitch (sl st): A flat stitch used purely to join separate parts together, finish edges, or move yarn to a new position without adding height. 3. Specialized Design MethodsAmigurumi: A Japanese technique of working tight, continuous single-crochet rounds to sculpt 3D stuffed toys, animals, and miniature keychains.Granny Squares: Working stitches in motif blocks from the center outward. These modular squares are later joined together to create retro blankets, bags, and modern clothing pieces.Filet Crochet: A mesh-weaving technique that uses alternating double-crochet stitches and open spaces to create pictorial patterns like lace table runners or curtains.
