The Story

A 200-year-old craft from Channapatna, originally patronised by Tipu Sultan. Known as 'Gombegala Ooru' (toy town).

The Technique

1. Wood Procurement & Seasoning Source: Artisans source Wrightia tinctoria (ivory-wood or Hale mara), a sustainable softwood.Curing: The raw wood blocks are seasoned for 1 to 3 months to completely remove moisture and prevent later cracking. 2. Preparing the Lac-SticksBase: Raw shellac (a natural resin secreted by lac insects) is heated over a charcoal fire until it liquefies.Coloring: Artisans mix the liquid resin with organic vegetable dyes—like turmeric for yellow, indigo for blue, and kumkum for red.Forming: The mixture is cooled and rolled into solid colored sticks. 3. Lathe Turning & ShapingMounting: The dried wood block is cut to size and mounted onto a hand-operated or mechanized turning lathe.Sculpting: As the wood spins rapidly, the artisan uses handheld chisels and files to sculpt the wood into smooth, rounded shapes. 4. Friction LacqueringApplication: While the carved toy component is still spinning on the lathe, the artisan presses a colored lac-stick against it.Melting: The intense friction-generated heat melts the lacquer instantly, causing it to bond smoothly with the wood surface. 5. Polishing with Palm LeavesBuffing: To achieve its famous high-gloss, mirror-like finish, the spinning toy is burnished using dried screw-pine leaves or palm leaves.Assembly: Individual components (like wheels or doll heads) are taken off the lathe and assembled by hand to complete the final toy
